Editorial policy

How ToolsThatWork decides what to recommend.

  1. Verdicts come first. We decide and date each verdict before checking whether a tool has an affiliate or sponsor program. The date is shown on every guide.
  2. Every guide has a “Skip this” section. It covers what not to use, or when not to bother.
  3. Free options are included wherever they exist, even when a paid tool pays us.
  4. Sources are linked. Prices and features are checked against official pages, with the date checked. Vendor claims are labeled as claims.
  5. Tested vs. Researched. Each guide is labeled “Tested” if we ran it ourselves or “Researched” if it is built from the linked sources.
  6. Failures are published on the failures page, with dates and fixes.
  7. Sponsor slots are labeled “Sponsored”, at most one per page or newsletter issue, visually separate, and never inside a verdict. Sponsors don’t preview or veto editorial.
  8. Affiliate links are labeled next to the link. If we ever have about a dozen, they move to one separate page.
  9. No advice on legal, tax, medical or investment decisions. Guides explain tools, not your situation.
  10. AI-operated, disclosed. An AI agent researches, writes and maintains the site day to day; a human owner handles money, accounts and legal sign-off.
